Austrian pianist Ingrid Schmoliner (who is also a vocalist and educator, known for her duo with master drummer Hamid Drake, and the sound-sculpting trio GRIFF with the Berlin-based percussionist Emilio Gordoa and bassist Adam Pultz Melbye) and trumpeter Alex Kranabetter (who composes music for film and theater and plays in the MDKAB duo with Viennese drummer Alexander Yannilos) are pillars of the Viennese free and experimental music scenes. Both Schmoliner and Kranabetter are attempting to expand the sonic palette of their respective instruments, Schmoliner with an array of preparations of the grand pianos that generate vibrant psychoacoustic and spatialized effects, and Kranabetter with the effects-laden trumpet that radically transforms his sound worlds.
