Tra i protagonisti del jazz inglese memori delle esperienze di Coleman e soprattutto Coltrane, ci fu sicuramente John Surman: il pluristrumentista di fiati ebbe la fortuna di essere nel plotone dei musicisti britannici che scoperchiavano il ruolo del free jazz in Europa, ma quella fortuna se la guadagnò anche con i suoi continui progressi stilistici.
