New York’s legendary minimalist composer (who considered himself a maximalist), pianist, and visual artist Charlemagne Palestine (b. 1947) began his musical career as a 16-year-old carillonneur in the church directly across from the famous MOMA Museum. Five years ago, the Belgian, Antwerp-based Sound in Motion festival organized a series of events showcasing this living legend’s versatility in numerous exhibitions and concerts.
This time, Palestine preferred not to take the 515 steps of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp for a carillon concert. But after a meeting with Belgian experimental pianist Seppe Gebruers (b. 1990), who comes from jazz and free improvisation fields, and a fruitful talk about the compositional process, Palestine was convinced to finally take on the steps to the carillon.
