German, Cologne-based composer Simon Rummel was educated as a singer in a boy’s choir. He later studied jazz piano with British pianist John Taylor, composition with German composer-violinist Johannes Fritsch, and visual art and sculpture with Georg Herold at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He conducts some amateur choirs and plays the organ each Sunday in a little church in the suburbs of Cologne. He writes music mostly for dance pieces and film music.

Many of Rummel’s compositions focus on microtonality, including those custom-made microtonal instruments, with a sculptural facet. Der Zauberlehrling (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) is one of these compositions. It was written for the unorthodox
